Crack filling works best on individual cracks — lines along seams, edges, and random cracks — while the surrounding pavement is still solid. The cracks are cleaned out and filled with a flexible hot-applied or cold-applied material.
Alligator cracking (interconnected cracks in a web pattern) usually means the base underneath has failed. Filling won't hold there; those areas typically need patching instead. Crack filling is often done before sealcoating so the seal goes over a sound surface.
